It's December

A look at our first week back from Thanksgiving Break:

We are still in Children Around the World in Social Studies. This week we focused on transportation and homes, talking about similarities in our needs and differences on how those needs are met. Next week, we will begin talking about celebrations and traditions!
**If you would like to share a family celebration or tradition with the class please email me and we will set up a time for you to come in and share with the class!

In Writing, we are still in the unit Writing for Readers. This week students learned about using their partner to sound out words, using the word wall and vowels chart to help them write a word and/ or sentence, and telling a story through our words. Next week, we will continue working with the same unit.

In Math we continue to work with addition and subtraction. This week we focused on subtraction, learning about taking numbers apart from a whole and the minus sign. Next week we will move on to addition story problems!

In Reading we finished up the unit on story elements. Students completed many assessments on character change, setting change, problem/ solution, and a graphic organizer with all 4 story elements!

Next week we will begin a new unit in Reading; Reader's Look at Print to Help Read the Text! Here are the learning targets for the new unit:
I can set myself up to read a book.  This means...
I use what I already know.
I read from left to right.
I can predict what the text is about.

I can use print strategies to read a book. I know the way books go!  This means...
I use sight words to make sense of what I read.
I use word by word matching.
I read signs and other print around my world to make sense of things.

I can try different strategies when I get stuck on a word.  This means...
I use letter and letter sounds to help me figure out a word.  I use letters to make words.I use different ways to figure out what words are.

Thankful for Our Buddies

Today we had the opportunity to spend time with our third grade buddies!
First, students colored a turkey and placed it on a chart to show their favorite Thanksgiving Day food!
Then, the third graders read a Thanksgiving Day book to the kindergartners!
Finally, everyone shared out one thing they are thankful for!
Happy Thanksgiving

Celebrating our Veterans

Forgot to post: November 11th - Veterans Day Celebration

Read and Munch

Thank you to our wonderful moms for coming in to read to us for our first Read and Munch! I loved walking around the room and listening to the parents questions students, make connections and explore the books as an interactive read aloud!
THANK YOU

Bread, Bread, Bread

This lesson was an opportunity for students to explore bread from other parts of the world. We talked about where the bread originated from and then got to taste it! Some bread we loved, some bread... not so much!
